Investigation confirms Feeney and McEllin deaths by drowningPall of grief hangs over county Garda investigation confirms Feeney and McEllin deaths by drowning Aine Ryan MAYO was in mourning as last night the continuing garda investigation brought a cold formality into the tragic drownings of Donal McEllin (63) and Ger Feeney (56) at Inishbofin, County Galway, over the weekend. Preliminary post mortem results stated that the cause of death in both cases was drowning while the investigation by the Marine Casualty Investigation Board will not start until its investigator has liaised with the gardaí at Clifden. Affectionately known to friends and colleagues as ‘Skinty’ and ‘The All Star’, their sudden loss has harnessed a poignant bond between the mourning communities of Castlebar, Balla and Ballintubber with the seafaring islanders of Inishbofin, Inishturk, and Clare Island, where the two men had often anchored the 41 foot motor cruiser, ‘Quo Vadis’. Sadly, it was the ‘Quo Vadis’, with Donal McEllin at the helm, that led the flotilla of boats that brought the late Clew Bay islander – and drowing victim also – Tommy Gibbons, to his last resting place in July 2009. Add in the deeply-rooted connection with the GAA and it is no wonder that those living in the parochial tapestry of villages and hamlets, townlands and crossroads of Mayo are left suspended in a deep sense of disbelief today. Conditions were cloudy in Clew Bay last Saturday as the two longtime friends sailed south in a moderate easterly wind from Rosmoney, near Westport, past the shelter of Clare Island. These were familiar waters for the men who, after their overnight stop on ‘Bofin, were due to sail to Galway to berth the boat for the winter. guild wars 2 gold Little did they know, it would be their last voyage as they sailed into the natural inlet and sheltered harbour at Inishbofin, and past the ruins of the imposing Cromwellian Barracks that has, over the centuries, become an extension of the cliff face. The sessiúin of music was in full swing last Saturday night as Donal and Ger chatted with islanders in Day’s Bar. There was a large group of mainlanders visiting the island for a birthday party and local box player, John Halloran led the ceol agus craic. According to one islander, who waved the men off from the pier in the early hours of Sunday morning, the sea was calm as they set off in their rigid inflatable boat (RIB) out to their anchorage. “It was the following morning when a fellow spotted something that was bright yellow on the beach below his house. He drove down as far as the harbour and then noticed the dinghy overturned out at the boat. He walked along the beach then and found the first body ,” the islander explained. The Mayo News understands that gardaí are interviewing those islanders who were in the company of the men before they left on the 10-foot Rib, as well as the man who discovered Donal McEllin’s body on the beach. By 11.15 am on Sunday morning Malin Coastguard Radio had tasked the RNLI Clifden lifeboat to go to the scene, along with a doctor and a garda. The second body was subsequently discovered under the overturned RIB. Both men were wearing lifejackets. The bodies of both men were removed from the island by helicopter on Sunday. They were flown to Galway Airport and transferred to the mortuary at Galway University Hospital where post-mortem examinations took place yesterday. Two legends SPEAKING yesterday about the tragedy, John Healy of Castlebar said: “Donal was so pernickety about safety on sea. He’d always say: ‘You must respect the sea’. And he’d check out everything before he’d go out. You know, Donal was a great sports enthusiast and was a champion swimmer and loved scuba diving in Killary Harbour. He also had a plane at one stage.” Donal McEllin was reared on the main street of the county town and educated at St Gerald’s College and Gormanstown College, County Meath. He was a key developer in the establishment of Castlebar Airport and long before he sailed through Clew Bay was often spotted by islanders flying his plane over the bay. Once the buzz of any small plane was heard at all, the regular retort during the 1970s was: “There goes McEllin.” His Piper Aztec created headlines in John Healy’s newspaper, The Mayo Post, in the early 1970s after ‘Skinty’ took off its wings in the dark of night and steered it down the main street. In a sketch, that bemused McEllin for years afterwards, Healy wrote about the exotic bird – Pipericus Skinticus – that had left the pint drinkers in Mick Byrne’s pub with dropped jaws as they emerged from their favourite hostelry. It was on main street too that McEllin’s late parents, Danny and Nan (nee McCormack) ran the general hardware and grocery shop, TA Lavelle and Company. He remained a bachelor and is survived by his three siblings, John (Balla), Margaret (Drogheda) and Fiona (Castlebar). His late uncle, John E McEllin was a Fianna Fáil senator and founder of the Irish Sugar Company. Political divide IRONICALLY, his best friend, Ger Feeney was staunchly on the other side of the political divide. A true-blue, dyed-in-the wool Fine Gaeler, by all accounts. It was on the sports field that Ger Feeney, of Ballintubber, excelled. And when, he went to Ballinafad College to complete his Leaving Certificate, unsurprisingly, he was on the team that won the Flangan Cup. His star as a gaelic footballer player continued to rise throughout the 1970s. Speaking about the poignancy and tragedy yesterday, former Mayo manager, fellow team mate, and TD, John O’Mahony said: “Ger made his championship debut for Mayo in 1972 against Sligo at McHale Park at just nineteen years of age. He was a superb wing back and he went on to have a wonderful career with the county, picking up an All-Star along the way. I played along with him at minor, Under-21 and senior level and he was one of those players who let his ability do the talking.” He referred to upcoming county final and the fact that Ger’s two sons, Richie and Alan play for Castlebar Mitchells, while his nephew, John Feeney captains the Ballintubber team. “His loss at this time is particularly poignant and I know that he was really looking forward to the county final in a couple of weeks time when Ballintubber play Castlebar Mitchells. There are so many families touched by this tragedy with Donal McEllin being the uncle of Tom Cunniffe, the Mayo and Castlebar Mitchells player,” John O’Mahony said. “It’s such an awful tragedy and one that has united the county in grief. May their souls rest in peace,” he added. His brother, Sean, is the well-known Mayo County Board secretary, and was in New York for the final of the FBD Connacht football league, between Mayo and New York, when he received the shock news of his brother’s death. gw2 gold Alongside his other brother Christy, Ger Feeney worked for the ESB for his entire working life. Speaking to The Mayo News last night, his former colleague, Stephen Broderick revealed how he was at a hurling match in Athenry when the news broke on Sunday. “I might as well have been hit over the head with a hurley. I worked with Ger at the ESB for over 20 years and he was such a lovable guy. He was caring and carefree and no better person to be with if you wanted to de-stress,” Stephen Broderick said. “I remember him when he played Under-21s and you know he never changed. It was as if he was still 21. guild wars 2 gold The last time I met him was for his sister’s sixtieth birthday party in Clifden three weeks ago. Ger was a legend,” he continued. Ger Feeney will be buried in the historic graveyard at Ballintubber Abbey tomorrow, Wednesday. According to local priest, Father Frank Fahey, he never lost his love for his home place at Corthoon or the village where he was reared. “Ger may have lived in Castlebar but he still had a farm out here in Ballintubber and loved the place. He has a lot of good friends out here This is an awful tragedy,” Father Fahey said. Ger Feeney is survived by his wife Kathleen (nee Caden) of Bofeenaun and their four children, Richie, Alan, Claire and Darragh (13), who just started first year in St Gerald’s College. He is survived by his brothers Sean and Christy and sisters, Mary Davis (Wales), Shiela Riches, (London) and Mary Lohan (Manulla, Castlebar). His late parents were the late Dick and Katherine (Katy) Feeney. Funeral arrangements THE remains of Ger Feeney, of The Oaks, Castlebar, will repose at Coady’s Funeral Home this evening from 5pm, with removal to the Church of the Holy Rosary, at 8pm. Requiem Mass will be held on Wednesday at 12 noon with the funeral proceeding to Ballintubber Abbey cemetery. The house is strictly private, with no flowers and donations if desired to Western Care. The remains of the late Donal McEllin will repose at his residence in Maryland tomorrow, Wednesday from 4 until 8pm. The removal will be on Thursday morning at 11am to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar for Mass at 12pm, with the funeral proceeding to Balla cemetery. Family flowers only and any donations if desired to the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice, also c/o Coady Funeral Directors, Castlebar. Share this page xboter 2014
